#1 Quartet

Quartet (1948)

Hallie came up with a project to help clear out our DVD collection: watch them all and decide if we really want to keep them. By the time you're reading here, we're well underway and have watched about fifty films so far. I originally posted to Facebook (and will continue to do so), but I thought a more permanent and searchable place would be better in the long term.

We're essentially watching our DVDs in the order they're filed: 5 general films, 1 musical, 1 religious, 1 Hitchcock, 1 Western, 1 war, 1 martial arts, 1 Christmas, 1 documentary, and 1 music video/concert. We're skipping horror until October and kids films - which includes all our Miyazaki, Disney, and Pixar movies.

We started tonight at the beginning of our DVD collection with Quartet from the 3 Films by W. Somerset Maugham. It's one of three anthology films based on Magham stories. None of the three are especially compelling, but they're all well done with some good British actors, among them Dirk Bogarde, Honor Blackman, and George Cole. My favorite of the four is the final one, "The Colonel's Lady," a tale of poetry and lost love. Cecil Parker and Nora Swinburne are great as the colonel and his lady.

Verdict: a keeper
